Exosystems, an artificial intelligence (AI)-based digital healthcare company and a member of Born2Global Centre, has succeeded in attracting Series A funding worth USD 3.9 million from SBI Investment, Laguna Investment, and Korea Technology Finance Corporation. With the addition of the new investments, the company has now amassed a total of USD 4.5 million in funding.

Exosystems is known for its digital care solution, consisting of a wearable medical device and connected user app, which enables patients undergoing neurorehabilitation or suffering from musculoskeletal disorders to monitor their health and receive appropriate treatment. The wearable sensor analyzes digital biomarkers related to musculoskeletal disorders and, through digital treatment software complete with behavioral intervention components, offers recommendations on exercise program or electrical stimulation therapy.

The technology of Exosystems has been verified through clinical research conducted in cooperation with the Seoul National University Bundang Hospital and other prominent Korean medical institutions. The device and its technologies have also been approved by the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and the CE-MDD (Medical Devices Directive) in Europe.

Exosystems' technology and growth potential were recently recognized when it was selected by government-funded R&D project worth USD 5 million. The company's digital healthcare device is now covered by public health insurance of Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.

With the latest investments, Exosystems plans to expand clinical & technical capabilities to further develop the company's technology and overseas business.

"Exosystems is a company with both AI software and hardware technology, and it makes products in the digital healthcare field that can be commercialized," said SBI Investment Team Lead Lee Joo-hyuk. He added, "Providing continuous monitoring and treatment outside the hospital is a critical factor in future medical care, and we expect Exosystems to bring about digital innovation not only to musculoskeletal healthcare but to all aspects of people's health and lives."

"Exosystems will be able to secure competitiveness in the overseas markets because of its unique technology that analyzes digital biomarkers and provides behavioral intervention protocol based on scientific evidence," said Exosystems CEO Lee Hoo-man.

The Born2Global Centre released an article that highlights the Korean Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT)'s Korean Digital New Deal. As part of the Korean government MSIT, Born2Global Centre has played a crucial role by connecting Korean startups with various opportunities worldwide.

At the entrance of a bank, people are greeted by a person on a TV screen. Everything about the person featured in the video looks so natural, from his facial expressions to the movement of his lips, teeth and even tongue. However, he is not a real human. He is an artificial human, dubbed "AI Human."

AI Human technology is being commercialized worldwide across various sectors, from finance and education to entertainment. Amid the global trend, one Korean company stands out in both the domestic and global stage, with its cutting-edge AI Human solutions.

Deepbrain AI develops advanced AI Human technology that makes artificial humans look and sound incredibly real and natural. The virtual humans can even chat with real people.

Deepbrain AI's solutions are based on deep learning technology, a type of AI-powered machine learning. They study and learn languages, facial, and physical movements by analyzing videos and speeches by real human beings. This company's AI Human is considered to have the "most human-like" look and sound. Thanks to the Deepbrain AI's technology, Korea has become the third country, after the U.S. and China, to successfully commercialize AI Human solutions.

Deepbrain AI currently applies its AI Human technology to create AI Bank Tellers, AI Tutors, AI Announcers and AI Commerce services, garnering both domestic and global recognition for its marketability and innovation.

Innovation Leads to Investments and Contracts

In just three years after its establishment in July 2016, Deepbrain AI already hit KRW 2 billion (around USD 1.7 million) in sales. The firm is now a key global player in the industry with branches based in Beijing and Shanghai in China, and California in the U.S.

The company's global expansion has recently brought meaningful results. Last August, Deepbrain AI signed a contract to supply its AI Announcer technology to China's two major broadcasting networks: Qinghai Television and Beijing Radio & Television Station (BRTV).

As part of the contract, the company will provide its AI Announcers to host news and entertainment programs run on the Chinese broadcasts, starting from the second half of the year.

'Digital New Deal' Accelerates Growth

Deepbrain AI is also one of the participating businesses in the Data Dam Project, part of the larger Korean Digital New Deal that the government has pursued as a national economic strategy since last year. The participation, in turn, has helped the company further advance its technological prowess.

As part of the project, the company helped build AI data to be used for technology that detects doctored videos. This can help address the problem of "deepfake" technology which is used to create fake videos that are mainly used for pranks and cyberbullying.

A government fund, amounting to KRW 2.6 billion (USD 2.2 million), helped the firm cover costs required for research and development on AI technology and allowed them to hire human resources for data collection and processing. As a result, they were able to complete the creation of more than 150,000 videos for AI learning designed to prevent deepfake technology.

The company was also selected as a technology supplier for the AI Voucher Project, another part of the Korean Digital New Deal. The project aims to allow tech companies to provide their AI solutions through a voucher system to small and medium-sized and venture companies that need AI-powered services. This program resulted in Deepbrain AI signing contracts with eight companies to offer AI services.

"It's a big challenge for a startup company to find a way to promote and sell costly AI solutions. The government's AI Voucher Project gave us a chance to partner with small and medium-sized clients," said a representative from Deepbrain AI. "It is a win-win project for both beneficiary companies and suppliers to gain momentum in growth. We hope that the benefits of the project will reach out to more businesses so the country can foster a thriving AI ecosystem."

As it secures growth momentum, Deepbrain AI has a new goal: to become a global unicorn company valued at more than KRW 1 trillion (USD 855 million) in two years.

To this end, the company plans to expand its AI Human services to other industries, such as movies, animated films, and even "metaverse", a virtual-reality space which is one of the major components in the next phase of the government's Digital New Deal project.

3i Inc., an industry-leading immersive experience company specializing in metaverse technology, artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality, and a member of Born2global Centre, completed an investment of nearly $24M (₩28B Won). The round included $20M from new financial and strategic investors and $4M from existing investors.

SV Investment led the round, with other participants including Korean Development Bank, LB Investment, DS Asset, YG Investment, Intops Investment, Enlight Ventures, NBH Capital, and Korea Asset Investment Securities.

Founded in 2017, 3i has 34 technology patents and includes two brands: Pivo and Beamo. Pivo is a platform business sitting at the intersection of hardware, software, and content focused on empowering everyday creators around the world with its Pivo Pod, a portable AI-powered smart pod, and suite of mobile apps that extend the capabilities of any smartphone and simplify rich content creation.

Beamo is an enterprise-grade digital twin solution for mission-critical businesses and sites. Beamo creates a dynamic digital twin that allows enterprises to conduct remote inspections, maintain equipment remotely, collaborate with remote teams and provide the most immersive navigation of mission-critical assets.

"3i is a company which is growing dramatically in B2B digital twin solutions using AI and AR/VR technologies and B2C video content creation platform", said Joo-wan Jeong, Director at SV Investment. He added, "I made this investment because I believe 3i will be able to grow into the only global player that possesses both technology and content in the integrated metaverse".

3i plans to use the funds raised to develop new products and expand its metaverse platform business. Additionally, 3i plans to invest significantly in scaling out the company with multiple open roles in recruiting, marketing, customer success, design and engineering, as well as key investments in the 3i brand experience in the market over the next year.

Ken Kim, CEO of 3i said, "The metaverse is the next-generation platform, where soon, all media flows are expected to move. Our products and solutions help enterprises and content creators leap onto the metaverse much more easily, seamlessly, and quickly than ever before, changing the way the physical world interacts with the digital world".

KDB, IMM Investment, Envester, and Noh & Partners participated in the investment round as new investors. Existing investors POSCO Technology Investment, L&S Venture Investment, and KDB Capital also participated, including some old shares. Deep Brain AI was recognized for its corporate value of about 200 billion won.

Deep Brain AI is a company that has global technology for interactive artificial intelligence using deep learning-based video synthesis and voice synthesis source technology.

Deep Brain AI has recently attracted attention from the industry by introducing an AI human solution that creates virtual humans capable of real-time two-way communication through deep learning artificial intelligence technology. This investment also demonstrated companies' marketability and technological innovation in various fields by implementing AI bank employees, AI tutor, AI announcer, and AI commerce as actual services using AI human technology.

Deep Brain AI plans to actively utilize this investment in the R&D field to advance AI human technology and plans to strengthen corporate competitiveness by spurring the massive recruitment of developers.

Deep Brain AI will also actively seek additional overseas investors during the second half of this year. Currently, it has local branches in Beijing, Shanghai, and California in the U.S. to form active business relations with various foreign companies, and recently signed AI announcer technology supply contracts with Qinghai TV and Beijing Broadcasting Station in China.

We have successfully completed the Series B investment round based on AI technology recognized not only in Korea but also in the world, said Jang Se-young, CEO of Deepbrain AI. "We will actively focus on expanding our business and developing new technologies."

Riiid Inc ("Riiid"), a leading AI education company and a member of Born2Global Centre, has raised $175 million investment from SoftBank Vision Fund 2*. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the world and lives. Leading the AI revolution are tech startups across the globe. CB Insights, the US-based business analytics platform and global database that provides market intelligence on private companies and investor activities, has come out with its 2021 list of promising startups in the AI area.

CB Insights unveiled the winners of the fifth annual AI 100 recently, which includes promising private AI companies from 12 countries, driving innovation across 18 industries and a broad range of cross-industry applications. 2021’s winners are working on solutions including AI transparency, climate risk, virus modeling, health, COVID-19 solutions, education, and more.

Startups from 12 countries get named in the list

In this year’s list, healthcare has been a highly represented core industry, with eight selected companies focused on dental insurance, surgical tech, clinical trials, etc. Also, emphasis was on COVID-19 related solutions with a selection of companies that have developed new products and features directly in response to the pandemic to mitigate its impact and help clients adapt. For example, US-based CB Insights, released SARS-CoV-2-related imaging datasets publicly to improve understanding of the virus and its impact on human cells. US company CB Insights, released a simplified version of its photo documentation product for construction companies to track job sites remotely. And Canadian startup CB Insights, launched COVID-Net, a suite of neural networks for Covid-19 detection and risk assessment in chest radiography.

The CB Insights research team selected the AI 100 from a pool of over 6,000 companies based on several factors, including patent activity, investor quality, news sentiment analysis, proprietary Mosaic scores, market potential, partnerships, competitive landscape, team strength, and tech novelty. The CB Insights,, based on CB Insights’ algorithm, measures the overall health and growth potential of private companies to help predict a company’s momentum.

“This is the fifth year CB Insights has recognized the most promising private artificial intelligence companies with the AI 100, and this is one of the most global groups we’ve ever seen. This year’s cohort spans 18 industries and is working on everything from climate risk to accelerating drug R&D,” said CB Insights CEO Anand Sanwal. “Last year’s AI 100 companies had a remarkable run after being named to the list, with more than 50% going on to raise additional financing (totaling $5.2B), including 16 $100 million+ mega-rounds. Many also went on to exit via M&A, SPAC, or IPO. As industry after industry adopts AI, we expect this year’s class will see similar levels of interest from investors, acquirers, and customers.”

Besides healthcare, early-stage innovators, top-funded companies, and 12 unicorn companies also made it to the AI 100 list. While 64% of the selected companies are headquartered in the US, Eight of the winners are based in the UK, followed by 6 each in China and Israel, and 5 in Canada. Other countries represented in this year’s list include Japan, Denmark, Czech Republic, France, Poland, Germany, and South Korea.

Riiid gets recognized for its remote learning solution

Korean edutech startup Riiid has achieved a place on the global list for its AI-based education solutions. The only other edutech company on the list is US-based ELSA, an English pronunciation coaching service.

Talking about Riiid’s inclusion in the list, YJ Jang, co-founder, and CEO of Riiid, said,“Riiid’s inclusion on the list validates our drive to apply AI to create a personalized learning experience and empower global education players to rethink traditional instruction. We were founded to make exponential changes in education, and we are indeed pioneering a new paradigm. The coronavirus pandemic created a perfect storm for Riiid to provide its proprietary AI technologies to meet the demand for the highest quality remote learning solution.”

Riiid, based in South Korea, features AI technology that analyzes student data and content, predicts scores and user behavior and recommends personalized study plans in real-time to help students achieve their learning potential. Riiid offers a mobile test prep app for a popular English proficiency exam that is used by more than two million students in Korea and Japan and reached No. 1 in sales among education apps in those markets. In addition, Riiid Labs, the company’s global arm based in Silicon Valley, has partnered with education companies including Kaplan, ConnecME, Grupo INICIE, and Casa Grande to combine Riiid’s AI technology and the content provided by those companies, creating personalized learning mobile apps in Korea, Egypt, UAE, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Brazil, Colombia, and Puerto Rico.

To generate research and attract top AI talent to education, last year Riiid successfully launched the inaugural Riiid AIEd Challenge, carried out on Google’s Kaggle platform. More than 3,390 teams from 90 countries participated — the most of any 2020 Kaggle algorithm competition hosted by a business entity. Riiid also hosted an AI in education workshop at the 35th annual AAAI conference with speakers including Thomas Frey, DaVinci Institute; Elizabeth Bailey Kozleski, Stanford Graduate School of Education; Martha Kanter, CEO of College Promise and the former U.S. Under Secretary of Education for the Obama Administration; and Kumar Garg, Schmidt Futures Foundation.
